Young Columba stayed with her mother alongside her older sister Lucila in León after the divorce. She attended Instituto Antonia Mayllen, a private Catholic school in León.

The occasion was considered her biggest political outing – until she became the First Lady of Florida in 1999.

Columba Bush met Jeb Bush in León in 1970, when she was only 16 years old. Jeb was a year older and an English teacher who helped build a school in the adjacent rural community of Ibarrilla. The duo remained friends until 1974, when on February 23, 1974, they were walking down the aisle in the chapel of the Catholic Student Center at the University of Texas, Austin. Part of the wedding is said to have taken place in Spanish, as Columba did not speak English at the time.
They have a total of three children; George Prescot (April 24, 1976), Noelle Lucila Bush (July 26, 1977) and John Ellis Bush (December 13, 1983).
George Prescot is a father of two, an attorney, US Navy Reserve officer, real estate investor and politician who holds the position of Commissioner for the Texas General Land Office, while his sister Noelle Lucila Bush is an employee of a software company based in Orlando, Florida. John Ellis Bush Jnr is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Latin American Studies.
